It’s the economy, stupid – or is it?
So now that the lipstick-pig arguments are buried on the last page (I’m surprised but they were still in today’s issue of the Star Tribune despite all the “real” issues happening) the big issue today – DUH! It’s the economy. It’s always been the economy, but no one has been listening.
An article on allvoices.com recently pointed out a financial talk-show host losing his mind on camera because it seemed very obvious to him (and others who wouldn’t come public) that this was going to turn into the worst economic crisis we’ve seen in decades.
I can understand this man’s frustrations. This is how I’ve felt ever since the Palin decision was announced and the “real Sarah Palin” started coming to the fore. In today’s Star Tribune reporters indicate that yet another conservative political pundit has come out saying Palin is just not ready to lead. But who is listening?
In a conversation I had yesterday with my mother and a couple of old friends from High School, the stark clear realities started to unfold for me. These women, who have propped the McCain ticket since he picked Palin, they don’t care about these issues! They’ve never cared about these issues. In fact, they don’t really have a clue about much of the details. One of them said “How could she not have experience, she’s been governor for six years?”
Wow. I was speechless. It was at that point that I realized, again, just how ingenius the McCain advisors have been. They knew they could undercut this election because of basic, plain-ole ignorance. They knew they could count on it. That’s why they keep telling lies, that’s why they keep saying things on the campaign trail that pundits and newspapers have already exposed as vicious and low-down. Because they knew, these women either wouldn’t care, or wouldn’t even hear about it.
Each of these women, in one way or another, asked me “where are you hearing all of these bad things about Palin?” What could I tell them? “It’s everywhere stupid?” It was hard for me to imagine someone who’s world was so wrapped up that they had no clue what was going on in this election (besides that Palin is “a hockey mom with balls”, as one friend put it).
So now, as the economy starts to skid to the bottom of the ocean, with more economic fallout to be coming straight on its heels, it gives me great pause to think about how a McCain-Palin “team” would handle these tough situations.
Pardon me if all I can think about are semi-automatics and lipstick. I think that says enough. Not to mention the lies and mistruths meant to take advantage of what appears now to be a very large percentage of the American population who spend five minutes watching a few select newscasts, then choose a candidate because they “seem pretty okay”.
Okay, I’m going to go find a nice, quiet corner now, and hope I can ride out the waves.
